Week 8 Recap - Polynesia Discovery

It’s the beginning of August and the end of another week of Summer Camp. Here’s of recap of what you missed last week!

Our friends from the Army National Guard hosted the much-anticipated D.A.R.E Graduation after 7 weeks of programming. They brought along the Fire Department where Club kids were able to get a first-hand look at a firetruck and ambulance along with the M-ATV. The kids even got to test their communication and teamwork skills on D.A.R.E’s obstacle course! For Art, Miss True taught everyone that “tiki” is the Maori term for “first human” and that tikis reflect Polynesian culture. Miss True also gave everyone colored tissue paper and glue to begin working on their monū clouds, a Tongan traditional craft. In the STEM room, everyone tried to rebuild the Moai, Eastern Island heads, using magnet tiles, Legos, and Jenga blocks.

On Tuesday, Club kids K– 5th went to the USS Midway Museum where they also got to check out their fighter aircraft and look at the statue commemorating “The Kissing Statue” that recreated the famous 1945 photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt. Back at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, our Teens took a break from their DnD campaign (Dungeons & Dragons) to make clay figures of the characters everyone made in the Library. A few of the figures they made were a wizard, a monster, and an archer. For STEM, Ian taught those who missed last week’s lesson how to make fake snow with shaving cream and baking soda.

In the STEM room on Wednesday, Ian showed the kids how to make origami boats and they tested to see if their boats would float above water. Miss True made paper leis and taught them how to make their own with paper, string, straws, and scissors in the Art Room. Our friends from the Vista Skatepark Coalition visited the Boys & Girls Club’s Gym to teach them how to ride skateboards. A few of the kids showed their skills by performing kick flips and ollies. Even our Vice President of Operations, Mr. Evan, came out to the Gym to give everyone some skateboarding tips! For the Teens’ Career Launch field trip, they visited the Vista Chamber of Commerce where they learned about the education needed to join the Chamber, where they record their podcast “Velocity”, and how nonprofit organizations contribute to the city.

The next day, for Music, Miss Sandra set up a game of Kahoot with the Teens to see who had the most music composition knowledge. Afterwards, everyone tried to learn how to play their favorite songs from shows like SpongeBob SquarePants and One Piece. Club kids K– 5th went to the Wave Waterpark where Elias celebrated their birthday and Mr. Mike treated him to some snacks and goodies.

On the last day of the week, for STEM, Ian hosted a boat building competition to see who could build the strongest boat with only plastic cups, foils, and other random items. Friday was “Water Day” where a big inflatable waterslide was set up for all our Club members to cool off and enjoy. Inside the Teen Center, the staff and Club members had an official birthday celebration set up for Elias where everyone sang “Happy Birthday”, ate pizza and cake, and spent time together.

And that concludes the second-to-last recap of Summer Camp! We plan to end the last week of Summer Camp on a high note. Come back next week for our final 2024 Summer Camp recap!
