Public Safety Power Shutoff Protocol

If a public safety power shutoff happens, they will typically occur with advanced notice, though in the event they happen during our hours of operation our response will be:

  • BGCV Club staff will notify families by phone.

  • If a power shutoff happens within the course of our program day and extends for longer than two hours, parents/guardians will be notified to pick up their child from the program. Parents/guardians are expected to pick their child up within two hours of notification or as soon as reasonably possible.

  • Contact information provided on membership forms will be utilized to ensure that BGCV has the most current parent/guardian contact number(s) available.

  • In the event that parents are unable to pick up their child, Boys & Girls Club members will be relocated to our Main Site (410 W. California Ave., Vista, CA 92083) until they can be picked up.

  • If the power is out for more than two hours, the program site that is affected will remain closed until power is restored at that location.

  • If the power shutoff happens during a field trip, members will be transported back to their program site to resume their day;

    • If the power shutoff affects their program site as well, parents and guardians will be notified to pick up their child.

    • In the event that parents are unable to pick up their child, Boys & Girls Club members will be transported to our Main Site location until they can be picked up.

  • In the event of an emergency or safety advisory that affects your child’s program site, your child will be evacuated to another location.

  • In most cases, that evacuation location will be the Main Site, though in the event that the location needs to be diverted due to safety reasons, Club staff will contact parents/guardians alerting them of the alternate pick-up location and time.

  • Site updates regarding the status of the power outage and affected sites will be available on our BGCV Facebook and our homepage.

Continued Commitment: In July 2020, all local Boys & Girls Clubs voted to adopt additional safety measures to further improve safety within our Clubs. Many of these practices were already in place, however, Boys & Girls Clubs determined these practices should be mandatory for all Clubs. These measures include more stringent reference and background checks, enhanced Club Safety Committee requirements for all Clubs, greater communication of key safety resources and information available for staff and members, and more.

Nationally, Boys & Girls Clubs of America has advocated the passage of the U.S. PROTECT Act, which improved background screening systems and access. The national organization has also partnered with the FBI, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and the Centers for Disease Control to contribute to the development of safety practices that benefit ALL youth-serving organizations.

Club members deserve nothing less than our constant focus on their safety and our firm commitment to protect every child who is entrusted to our care at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista.
