Week 7 Recap - Polar Adventure

It’s almost the end of July and the end of another week of Summer Camp here at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. Here’s a recap of everything our Club kids did during Week 7!

On Monday, our Teens visited the San Diego Botanic Garden where they learned about how succulents were low water plants. They also visited the Bamboo Pond that had lots of waterlilies. Back at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, in the Teen Room’s kitchen, Teens learned how to cook and flip burger patties. They made enough burgers to feed the rest of the Teens. In the STEM room, everyone built replicas of an ice castle with magnetic tiles.

In the Library on Tuesday at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, our Teens began a new campaign of Dungeons & Dragons and started creating their characters. They chose their characters’ stats and what languages they speak. In the Kinder Room, our friends at MAAC donated a couple of new tandem bikes for our littles to enjoy. For the Tuesday field trip, our K- 5th graders went to Belmont Park for a to enjoy the park’s amusement rides. They loved feeling the dips and seeing the ocean views while riding the Giant Dipper.

For this week’s Career Launch field trip, the Teens went to the Vista Fire Department’s Fire Station 1. They learned about the education needed to become a firefighter and how many hours a firefighter works in a shift. They also got to see one of the stations’ fire trucks and see the equipment they store and for what purpose they serve. At the Boys & Girls Club, in the Art Room, the kids painted polar bears onto sheets of paper. During their time in the Gym, a few of the kids played hockey while the rest were facing Mr. Mike’s 3-point contest to see who had the best shot. Our littles created puppets with paper bags, sheets of paper, markers, and scissors.

The next day, Club kids K- 5th grade took a trip to the San Diego Zoo. While visiting the Zoo, the kids saw flamingoes, hippos, and learned the names of the North American native bees. At the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, the Teens continued their Dungeons & Dragons campaign and began exploring the tavern and meeting a few NPCs (non-playable characters). In the Art Room, Miss True taught the kids how to make a cross-belt crowns and hats for everyone to wear. In the STEM, Ian taught the kids how to draw faces. It was challenging, but one of our 3rd graders, Cat, managed to draw a face with eyebrows, a nose, ears, and a chin pretty well.

For the last day of the week, for STEM, Ian taught everyone how to make fake snow with only using shaving cream and baking soda. For Art, the Club kids practiced painting with watercolor by painting the Aurora Borealis. Our Teens enjoyed swimming and games in the Carlsbad Lagoon where they rented a couple of Aquacycles and kayaks.

We’ve only got two weeks left of Summer Camp and our Club kids have more exciting trips and activities to come! Check back next week for our Week 8 Recap!
