Week 3 Recap - European Extravaganza

Week 3 of Summer Camp has come and gone at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. Check out what you missed this week!

On Monday, for art, the Club kids made posters showing the different ways they like to calm down from stress. Their favorite ways to de-stress are listening to music, talking to someone, and saying something nice about themselves. The kids replicated a Greek ancient building with building blocks in the STEM lab. One of the buildings they chose to replicate was the Acropolis of Athens. For our Teen Career Launch Trip, our Teens went to Downtown Vista to learn about three small businesses, Kingdom Kutz, Archer’s Arrow Coffee House, and Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream. At Kingdom Kutz, our host Donnell gave a nose and ear trim demonstration. Everyone learned about how Donell went from a barista to a barber and then a business owner. Josh and Jen, the owners of Archer’s Arrow, also described their career journey. After arriving at Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, everyone got to try the various flavors Handel’s offered such as Blue Monster and Green Monster.

Miss True taught our kids what is a still life drawing is by showing her still life drawing that shows a book, glasses, dolls, and a wall electric outlet as a reference on Tuesday. The kids used objects such as plastic roses, a camera, a stuffed teddy bear, and a bottle as references while using pencils and oil pastels to make their own still life drawing. In the Teen Center, our Teens took on the Fruit Roll-Up Challenge. Everyone received one Fruit Roll-Up and competed against each other to see who could finish theirs the fastest. Our Club kids Kindergarten to 5th grade, went to the Wave Waterpark. The first graders got to hang out in the Splash Pad where everyone was drenched from head to toe. Meanwhile, our 4th and 5th graders got to swim and splash around in the Competition Pool and ride the Slide Tower.

A group of 100 staff and Club kids went to Petco Park to watch the Padres in their game against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. Everyone put their best effort in trying to get on the Jumbotron by dancing to music and cheering loudly. Although they couldn’t get on the Jumbotron, the kids had fun watching the Padres’ victory against the Washington Nationals 8-5. Back at the Boys & Girls Club, for STEM, the kids made glow-in-the-dark slime. In the Art Room, the kids learned about tole painting and tole ware. Everyone painted a pattern or flowers onto paper cups, plate, or pie tins.

For Career Day on Thursday, it was an exciting and meaningful experience for our 2nd – 12th graders. Vendors from different organizations and schools visited the Boys & Girls Club of Vista to answer any questions the kids had about their careers. Some of the career paths our kids learned about were a teacher, a sergeant, and a sheriff. Everyone received a stamp card to encourage them to meet with all our vendors. The stamp card included a list of questions on the back for our Club kids to use as a conversation starter. One of our 2nd graders, Kingston liked learning about the military from one of our vendors, the Army National Guard. April from Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, one of our vendors, said she’s always happy to meet the kids from the Boys & Girls Club because they are always kind, courteous, and intuitive. Meanwhile, our Kindergarteners and First graders learned how to determine if a bug is an insect from our friends Maribel and Nolan of the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum. They learned about the names of the parts found on an insect’s body and made their own insects with modeling clay, paper cut-outs, and wooden sticks. After Career Day ended, everyone enjoyed pizza and spaghetti with a sweet tea to drink.

Our Teens went to the Del Mar Fair on Friday to conclude Week 3 of Summer Camp. They rode the Skyliner, a 100 ft tall swing ride, and felt the sensation of flying by riding the Cliff Hanger in the fair’s Fun Zone. Some hopped on the Big Wheel to enjoy the view of the California coastline and the San Dieguito River Valley. Back at the Boys & Girls club, Ian taught the Club kids how to make colored sugar cubes with sugar, water, and a tiny bit of food coloring inside the STEM lab. In the Art room, Miss True’s groups turned the Art room into their own museum by making their own mosaic art pieces to display on the walls.

The summer heat is here and it’s the start of a new month! Be sure to come back to check out our Week 4 Recap!
