Week 2 Recap - South American Fiesta

The summer sun is finally out as Week 2 of our Summer Camp comes to an end at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista! Here’s a recap of what our Club kids did this week!

On Monday, our teens enjoyed the thrills at Belmont Park in San Diego! They rode the Liberty Carousel that features 12 preserved paintings by the San Diego Historical Society. Some went on the ice-cream themed, “Tilt-A-Whirl.” They even rode the park’s newest addition, “Shipwreck Cove,” where they pull themselves upward 30 feet to get the perfect view of the entire park! In the Computer Lab at the Boys & Girls Club, Kelvin’s group spent time playing online games such as Roblox. D.A.R.E America visited the kids to teach them general life skills to help them make safe and healthy life decisions. Our kids learned about the D.A.R.E. decision making model: Define, Assess, Respond, and Evaluate.

Our Teens became the “foamy homies” when Dr. Bronner’s brought back the snofoam snowstorm on Tuesday. They got their chance to make snow angels and play with soap foam. There were some slips, tricks, and even a hair wash train! A few of them spotted the “abominable snofoam-man” from the Dr. Bronner’s Team hidden in the foam.

For our second career launch field trip of the summer, our Teens visited our longtime partners, Watkins Wellness, who gave our teens a warehouse tour. Giselle, Maggie, and Michael hosted a behind-the-scenes peek of how the manufacturers make their world-renowned hot tubs. Afterwards, our teens got to wind down through friendly games of ping-pong and foosball. Once everyone left Watkins, they enjoyed pizza at Oggi’s restaurant in Vista. Back at the Boys & Girls Club, our teen girls learned how to set and achieve their goals by creating vision boards. Many of their vision boards had inspiring quotes, dreams for the future, and images of their role models.

On Thursday, Club kids Kindergarten to 5th grade, boarded Oceanside Adventures’ newest vessel, Nala, to join their own “Whale and Dolphin Excursion.” Although they didn’t get to see a whale, the bottlenose dolphins that swam near the boat stole the show as the kids gathered around to look. One of the hosts, Karen, circulated the boat sharing facts about aquatic animals from whales to dolphins to seals and even pelicans. In the STEM lab, our kids got to create their own colorful slime. Some kids chose to make their slime either blue or pink while some added glitter. For art, our kids made masquerade masks with sheets of paper and wooden sticks. They enjoyed making masks based on their favorite characters. During lunch, the District handed fresh produce for everyone to eat.

Our teens visited Altitude Trampoline Park on Friday. They showed off their gymnastic skills on the Tumble Track. They took on the challenge of climbing the 20 feet tall Rock Wall. Also, they competed on the Battle Beam by knocking their opponent off balance.

Summer is starting to go by quick and we still have lots of plans ahead! Be sure to keep an eye out for our Week 3 Recap!
