Week 4 Recap - North American Discovery
Another week has quickly passed at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista. Here’s a recap of what our Club kids did during Week 4 of Summer Camp!
On Monday of Week 4, in the STEM lab, Ian had our Club kids recreate the Statue of Liberty using either Legos, wooden blocks, or magnet tiles. Some kids worked independently to build their own version of the Statue of Liberty while others chose to work in teams. When the Club kids entered the Art Room, Miss True had everyone tap into their creative senses by “making the real unreal.” To do this, the kids had to choose an animal found in real life and add something they don’t have, like a ferret with bat wings. After some thinking and sketching, everyone came up with real-life animals with unique traits such as a cat with a unicorn horn and a horse with four wings. Our Teens went to the Icetown ice-skating rink to learn how to ice skate for the first time. They learned skating techniques such as gliding, forward swizzles, and the proper way to get up on the ice. In the beginning of the ice-skating lesson, many of our Teens were hesitant to skate, but eventually gained the confidence to move from the edge of the rink. Some even lent support to their friends by holding each other while skating to the middle of the rink.
The next day, our K-5th Club kids took a trip to Cinepolis to watch the new Disney Pixar movie “Inside Out 2”. They loved watching how Riley’s emotions, such as Sadness and Joy, affected her behavior. Afterwards, everyone spent some time in the Cinépolis’ arcade. The Club kids tested their skills in basketball by playing one of the arcade games, Extreme Shot. Back at the Boys & Girls Club of Vista, Ian taught our kids 3rd - 5th graders about digital safety. For art, Miss True showed everyone a Navajo sand painting and explained how sand painting can add texture and dimension to an art piece. The Club kids made their own sand paintings using colored sand and glue. They made sand paintings of jellyfish, rabbits, and circular patterns.
In the STEM lab on Wednesday, our kids were separated into smaller groups and told each other about any common interests they shared. Once they found a common interest, they made a picture collage based on that common interest. For art, the kids learned about how photographer Walter Wick became known for his elaborate images in two picture books I Spy and Can You See What I See? They used one of his photography pieces as a reference to create their own landscapes using mini figures. They also made their own version of the traditional Mexican board game, Lotería. Their board games included pictures like “el pájaro”, “la luna”, and “la dama.” They also learned the English translations of these words as well. Which in this case were “the bird”, “the moon”, and “the lady.” For this week’s Career Launch trip, the Teens visited MiraCosta Community College for a campus tour to learn about this pathway to higher education. They saw some of the college’s departments such as the Theatre, Arts, Library and many more. Their tour guide took them into the theatre room and the Box Office. After the end of the campus tour, our friends at Gianni’s Pizza donated pizzas for everyone to enjoy during lunch.
On the last day of the week, our kids constructed towers out of toothpicks and marshmallows in STEM where they were challenged by each other to see whose tower stood the tallest out of everyone in the group. When the kids entered the Art Room, everyone learned about the artist Ana Mendieta and how she used natural materials like sand, stones, and leaves to create silhouettes of female body forms. Miss True gave the kids sheets of paper to create their own silhouettes of their hands. For the last field trip of the week, the Club kids went on a guided tour of Petco Park. Everyone learned about the history of Petco Park and the San Diego Padres by walking down the field warning track and seeing the Padres Hall of Fame.
Summer is flying by and there’s a lot more fun for our Club kids! Keep an eye out for our Week 5 Recap next week!
