Family Night celebrating Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month

Friday, October 14th, 2022

To celebrate the end of Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month, we hosted our first Family Night since before the pandemic where. We welcomed all Club families to join us for a fun-filled evening.

The event started with showcasing the displays our Club members and staff put together with the goal to learn more about the cultures celebrated during this month. We wanted out Club members dive deeper than what we see on the surface. What is their national flower? What is their culture like? Who is from this country and what are they known for? What food is popular? What artists and musicians are from there? Take a look at what they created!

At 5 pm, there was a performance from the incredibly talented students of Tierra Caliente Academy. Tierra Caliente Academy is a 501c3 nonprofit cultivating education through the arts with an emphasis on cultural arts. They are located in Vista just down the street from our Main Site and with many of their dancers are from all over North County. Through the arts, they provide their students with the tools to find their identity, self-confidence, work on teamwork, and respect for diversity. The performers were all students from the academy whose experience ranged from beginner to intermediate to even advanced. The dancers ranged in age from 11-14 years old and the solo singer was 8 years old!

The program was as follows:

  1. Campeche Sarao

  2. Maya sang- “Si Nos Dejan” & “My Way”

  3. Nayarit Costa

  4. Maya sang - “Part of Your World” & “No Me Queda Más”

To end the night, we gathered Club families in our art room to share a meal with food from a variety of countries. Thanks to Northgate Market and Maytag we were able to share tamales (Guatemala/Mexico), empanadas (Spain), a taco bar, rice, beans, ceviche (Peru), pan dulce (Mexico), and even agua frescas (Mexico).
